And So It Begins… (Sarah’s 1st Blog Post)
Heyo! Welcome to my first official blog post from the American Liberty Tour. Things’ve been pretty crazy so far, which is why I haven’t gotten to it til now. But I know that I have many admirers out there, and I’d hate to disappoint them, so I promise that I will do my best to post regularly.
Moving on.
Let’s see if I can kind of bring you all up to speed on what’s been happening. We arrived in Sacramento last Wednesday. Seems like a lot longer ago than that, but with the hours we’ve been keeping, it shouldn’t really be all that surprising. The Tour officially kicked off the next day with American Majority’s candidate and activist training meeting. It was really heartening to see all the people who came to learn how to channel all of their energy toward making real differences in our country’s political landscape. There was even a little kid in a suit. A suit! The children are our future, and they’re pretty snappy dressers.
That day was also the first time we got a look at our fancy-pants wrapped RVs. I was given the coveted job of showing them off in a vlog for our viewing public. “Awesome” is not a term I throw around loosely, and I’ve gotta say, those things really do look awesome.
We had our first town hall meeting that night, too. Chuck DeVore kicked things off. He’s the California assemblyman who’s currently on a valiant mission to unseat Barbara Boxer, a.k.a. Senator Ma’am. He definitely had a lot of support from the audience, and it’s encouraging to know that he has a lot of momentum behind him. It’s a big deal for someone to challenge a politician who’s so settled in her cushy position, and hopefully what he’s doing will encourage other liberty-minded activists to realize their potential as political candidates. Lew Uhler, founder and president of the National Tax-Limitation Committee, also took a turn at the microphone. Now he is one feisty guy. No joke. He’s clearly very passionate about tax reform, and I’m pretty sure it would’ve been impossible to listen to him and not feel energized.
That first day was pretty long. Went to In-n-Out Burger for the first and probably last time in my life. The burger was all right, but the fries? Meh. Really, really meh. But you win some, you lose some, I guess. Lights-out was pretty late, which isn’t exactly the way to go when you have to be on the road at 4:30 the next morning. Yeah. Waking up at 3:45 AM is surprisingly not all that much fun, though for whatever reason, Amy and I were pretty hyper. We totally knocked over some suitcases because we were running through the parking lot with the trolley. There was also some impromptu dancing, if I remember correctly. I figured I’d be passed out on the drive to Salt Lake City, but I think I stayed awake the whole time. Which turned out to be a good thing, because the scenery was amazing. Lots of mountains. And tumbleweeds. Like actual tumbleweeds! I mean, I only saw them by the side of the road, but Caleb and Adam saw one blow across the highway. All my life I’d wanted to see a tumbleweed cross the road, and I missed it when it finally happened. But we did film the pilot episode of “Tumbleweed Chasers” for the Discovery Channel, so all was well with the world.
We were in Salt Lake City for 9-12. The big rally was held at the State Capitol, which was gorgeous. Beautiful building, mountains all around, blue skies with wispy clouds…just an awesome day for a 9-12 rally. It was incredible to be surrounded by over 2,000 other people who believe in the ideals of limited government and liberty. To learn later on that afternoon that the crowd in DC was made up of possibly over 2 million people just made the day even more amazing. Although I’m not surprised, only one media outlet showed up, but it was toward the end of the rally when the crowd started to dissipate. Despite our frustration at the media’s general disregard for non-liberal perspectives, we definitely sent a message to our so-called leaders who think they’re running the show. They need to wise up and begin to realize that it’s in their best interest to work in our best interest.
